The Chargers will have their starting quarterback despite being him added to the injury report earlier in the week.
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert will be active for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. The team has since announced the news.
There was a question surrounding Herbert's status after the QB said on Friday that he was dealing with a high ankle sprain. Herbert did not practice on Wednesday but was a limited participant on Thursday. However, the Chargers signal-caller was listed as a non-participant in Friday's session and was deemed questionable for the Week 3 game. On Saturday, NFL Network Insiders Tom Pelissero, Mike Garafolo and Rapoport reported that the Chargers were optimistic that Herbert would play against the Steelers.
Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said this week that while the team stayed in Carolina, Herbert was "working through" an ankle injury after a collision in their Week 2 win against the Panthers. The QB suffered the injury in the third quarter when his legs got trapped under linebacker DJ Johnson. Herbert was shaken up after the play but finished the game.
Herbert's stat line in the victory was 14-of-20 for 130 pass yards, two touchdowns and one interception. It was the fewest pass yards in a win in Herbert's NFL career.
With Herbert officially active, he has the opportunity to become the first Chargers QB to start a season 3-0 since Drew Brees in 2002, per NFL Research.
In two games this season, Herbert has completed 67.4 percent of his passes for 274 yards, three TDs and one INT.
The Chargers and Steelers kick off in Pittsburgh at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
