Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert exited Sunday's 20-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third quarter after aggravating an ankle injury and did not return.
Herbert, who has been dealing with a high ankle sprain this week, limped off the field after taking a sack by Elandon Roberts.
Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters after the game that he didn't have any immediate update on injuries from the game. He added that the plan heading into Sunday's game was that at the first sign of a limp, the team would take Herbert out.
"It's a little sore," Herbert told reporters while donning a walking boot after the game, . "Did everything I could to go back in there… but I couldn't push off of it."
Herbert added that he is hopeful he'll be able to play next Sunday when the Chargers host the Kansas City Chiefs.
Taylor Heinicke entered the game for one snap to replace Herbert and handed it off to J.K. Dobbins for a 4-yard gain. Heinicke returned on the next Chargers possession and remained in for the remainder of the game.
Herbert finished 12-of-18 for 125 yards and one touchdown.
